Located on the shores of Cockle Bay in Darling Harbour, Sydney Nick’s Restaurant is a popular seafood restaurant with a Mediterranean twist.

The seafood platters are the ideal way to get a taste for everything on the menu but if you are dining in a small group, or want to try one of their special dishes here are a few ideas of what you should order.

For starters, why not try the Taramasalata dip with Sonoma bread. A popular dip in Greece, this taramasalata is fresh and just the right amount of salty. The bread is a little on the bland side and it probably would of been better if it was lightly toasted or at least cut into serving size portions.

For the appetizers, a classic on the menu is the Salt and Pepper Calamari. Unlike the processed looking rings, these calamari are served whole, perfectly seasoned and with a wedge of lemon. While the centers were slightly overcooked they were still very tasty and fresh.

The John Dory is an excellent fish of choice if you want to try something local and not too fishy tasting. Its light and perfect grilled with a salad or side of fries – or as they say in Australia, chips.

If you want to try something a little more filling, choose the Blue Eye Trevalla Fillet. This fish is pan seared in a Macadamia crust and served with chive mashed potatoes and aioli. While individually they all taste great, when they are together on the plate this dish is a little too rich. If you are curious to order the Macadamia crusted fish, perhaps choose a salad on the side to make it a bit lighter.

Nick’s also offers many interesting dessert choices including a Coconut and Kaffir Lime Panacotta. While this dessert sounds light and refreshing, the Kaffir lime taste is very overpowering, so much so that you feel like you are eating a thai curry. The coconut flavor is completely washed out by the flavor of the Kaffir lime and although its presented beautifully, perhaps try a different dessert.

Overall, the ambience at Nick’s is great and the location is fantastic, making this a popular tourist restaurant. While nothing is exceptional, the food is good, fresh and well presented.
