osteria mozza

Osteria Mozza boasts being one of the best italian restaurants in Los Angeles so as a passionate foodie I decided to check it out.

Firstly, we were seated at a little poky table in the corner. The table was very close to the people sitting next to us (awkward) and the chair was too far away from the table (uncomfortable) so that was a bit disappointing.

The atmosphere, while romantic, was also loud and we could hear pretty much every word from the people sitting next to us.

Despite all that, the food was yummy. The mozzarella bar and the pasta were the clear stand outs for the night and, if you are a fan of both I would skip the main meals all together and just share a variety of mozzarellas, antipasti and pasta- yum!

The mozzarella bar was fantastic and had a variety of burrata’s and even ricotta mozzarella combinations.

We ordered a burrata and ricotta combination and while the cheese was delicious the vegetables that came with it were completely burnt, ( I think the vegetable was eggplant but it was so overcooked I couldn’t tell!).

I am sure some would argue that the eggplant was ‘caramelized’ but it was really chewy and you just couldn’t eat it without swallowing it whole.

The pasta dish we got was amazing, it was recommended by the waiter and was a ravioli filled with cheese and egg yolk served with a sage butter sauce. Absolutely amazing.

For the main course we ordered fish, it was very average compared to the delicious pasta and mozzarella.

For dessert we ordered their Fall special, date and pumpkin torte, it was excellent and came with bourbon ice cream and walnut cookies.

Overall, Osteria Mozza has good food but there seems to be a few odd slip ups for this place. It seems like they try to pack too many people in and perhaps take short cuts with some of their food preparation.

If you live in Los Angeles, Osteria Mozza is definitely one of those places you should check out, if you are just visiting you can probably skip this one and try some of the other top rated restaurants in town.

Overall Rating: 3.5 / 5 stars

Osteria Mozza is located at 6602 Melrose Ave, Hollywood, CA 90038.
